What is the difference between therapy and life cOaching?

While therapy and life coaching may seem similar, they serve distinct purposes.

Therapists delve into past experiences, emotions, and thought patterns to help clients understand and overcome challenges. Therapy focuses on healing and addressing underlying mental health conditions and trauma, often with a clinical approach.

Life coaching is designed to empower individuals to achieve their goals and aspirations. Coaching focus on the present and future, helping clients develop strategies, overcome obstacles, and build confidence, often with a collaborative, solution-focused approach.

sO why shOuld i chOOse life cOaching Over therapy?

You don’t have to choose! I highly encourage my clients to be in therapy if they are not already. If you are interested in only therapy, I am more than happy to direct you to a directory and other resources. You can also do both which is what most others do. I have personally benefited from being in both therapy and life coaching at the same time. I am happy to connect with your therapist with your consent.

Life coach certification training includes learning how to be ethical and put the client's needs first. This means setting clear boundaries, being professional, and avoiding situations that could create a conflict of interest. I was taught to get informed consent from clients, making sure they understand what coaching is and what it can't do. I respect clients' choices and empower them to make their own decisions, while offering guidance and support. Ethical training also covers keeping client information private and confidential, only sharing it when legally required, and knowing when to refer clients to other professionals if they need help beyond what I can provide.

ARE there ethics in life c0aching like in therapy?

s0 what training d0 y0u have?

I have a strong foundation in psychology (research assistant for four years) and sociology (teaching assistant then promoted to advanced facilitator), coupled with 6 years of experience in higher education and almost 5 years of experience in admissions counseling and college planning. This background has equipped me with the skills to facilitate group discussions, handle conflict management, and provide guidance and mentorship to individuals. My work as an activist and my involvement in speaking engagements and workshops have honed my ability to communicate effectively and connect with diverse audiences. Additionally, my extensive experience in reviewing THOUSANDS of college applications, cover letters, and resumes, as well as conducting dozens of interviews, has sharpened my proofreading, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. I am currently pursuing certification as a life coach, further enhancing my capacity to support individuals on their personal and professional journeys.

dO yOu Offer any in persOn sessiOns?

I offer my sessions through remote platforms only, specifically through Google Meet because it is secure and easy to access. This is also because some of my clients are not local and come from anywhere in the country!

If I cancel my sessiOn, will I still be charged?

To avoid a charge, please cancel your appointment more than 24 hours in advance. Cancellations made within 24 hours will be charged the full session rate. This policy is in place because my time is valuable, and last-minute cancellations limit my ability to schedule other clients who could have booked that time.

I have not received a refund request before, but I do not offer refunds for sessions or coaching packages due to the nature of the services. You are free to let me know if you would like to stop coaching at any time without any obligation to continue.

dO yOu give refunds?

DO yOu take insurance?

No, I am not in network, like most coaches (and therapists!) are.

My rates reflect my extensive experience in higher education where I have gained knowledge in psychology, sociology, social justice, advocacy, as well as honed my skills in providing student college counseling, conducting comprehensive reviews of resumes, cover letters, and essays, interviewing various individuals, and being an active facilitator in the community organizing/activist communities.

As a professional in education as well as an activist that often relied on mutual aid, I understand the financial challenges many people face. Compared to life coaches in my area, I've set my rates to be affordable and accessible. Feel free to search the rates of services by other individual and company providers and you will find that my affordability and accessibility statements hold true!

Why d0 y0u charge these rates?
